In April 1982, the Illinois EPA conducted groundwater investigations in Wedron following receipt of many complaints via the Illinois Department of Public Health of people exposed to a pungent, gasoline-type odor in private well water. The investigation confirmed the presence of benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylenes.
Erin Brockovich’s environmental scientist, Bob Bowcock recently met with the community to respond to their concerns that the Environmental Protection Agencies involved in the investigation were not moving quickly enough to pin-point the cause.
“I’m very concerned, particularly given that the contamination levels are alarmingly high, and are some of the highest levels that we’ve ever seen,” Erin said.
Erin and her team are continuing with their investigations.
